Compensation for IT Staff on the Rise
Adapted from an article from Lorraine
Cosgrove Ware, www.cioupdate.com
According
to the April CIO Magazine tech poll, IT
budgets are expected to grow 6.6 percent
over the next 12 months, down from 7.3
percent reported in March. While that
most recent forecast is lower than levels
reported in the first three months of
2004, it remains higher than it was at
any point last year.
Salaries
on the Rise
Results
of the April Tech Poll showed that IT
staffers are benefiting from the CIO's
somewhat loosened purse strings. On average,
compensation costs (including salaries,
benefits, and bonuses excluding stock
options) increased 4.4 percent over the
past 12 months -- its greatest increase
in the past 15 months, according to the
288 panelists surveyed. Last year at this
time, compensation was increasing at a
rate of 2.2 percent.
CIOs
Will Invest in Security, Infrastructure
and eBusiness Software
When
asked about areas of planned investment,
CIOs reported a slightly improved outlook,
with 45 percent of panelists saying they
would increase spending overall in seven
technology areas this year. Security software
continues to be the strongest sector,
with 60 percent of CIOs planning to increase
spending - up from 55 percent last month.
The
percentage of CIOs planning to increase
spending on infrastructure software jumped
to 39.5 percent in April. More than half
(53%) of the CIOs responding to the poll
said they will increase investments in
computer hardware and 42 percent will
spend on ebusiness applications.
Each
month, CIO magazine, in partnership
with Deutsche Bank Securities and Ed Yardeni,
chief investment strategist, Prudential
Securities Inc., surveys a panel of senior
executives on current and future IT spending
as well as other IT issues. In April,
288 executives responded to the survey.
Companies with more than 5,000 employees
represented 16 percent of the responses.

Career
Tip
Regardless
of where you are in your career, consider
a personal web site where you can display
your resume, samples of work, letters
of recommendation and photo. This way,
if a potential employer wants information
on you, you can easily lead them to your
web site. It also helps you stay current
on your career even when you aren't looking.
It can even serve as a means of getting
speaking engagements or promotions!
